Cynthia L. Allen, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, is an Assistant Professor at the George Washington University School of Nursing.  Dr. Allen teaches in the Family Nurse Practitioner program and Doctor of Nursing Practice program; and serves as a Clinical Experience Faculty and DNP Project Primary Advisor.  She has been a nurse practitioner for 29 years, practicing in a variety of settings, including family medicine, telehealth, pediatrics, school-based health clinics, occupational health, rural health clinics, and cardiothoracic surgery. Previously, Dr. Allen was at the Medical University of South Carolina for over 20 years, where she served as a Clinical Assistant Professor within the Department of Family Medicine as a primary care provider, preceptor for nurse practitioner and medical students, and Co-PI for the HRSA Residency Education through Simulation in Procedural and Emergency Care Training grant. Cindy is a recipient of the GW SON Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award, Palmetto Gold Award, and MUSC Golden Lamp Awards. 

Dr. Allen is a recent Sigma Experienced Academic Leadership Academy scholar. She is actively engaged in the GW university-wide interprofessional education planning committee, as a co-investigator on interdisciplinary research projects, and a member of Sigma Theta Tau and the Eastern Nursing Research Society. Dr. Allen received her Bachelor’s degree of Science in Nursing from Bowling Green State University, a Master’s of Science degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University with a specialty in Critical Care, a Family Nurse Practitioner certificate from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Graduate Studies. Her interests include primary health care, interprofessional education, cardiovascular wellness initiatives, telemedicine, health care simulation, health policy, and equity.
