GW SON Hiring Approval Process

Policy Statement

This policy outlines the hire approval process set forth by the George Washington University (hereinafter, “GW” or “the University”) School of Nursing (“GW Nursing” or “SON”) for internal and external hiring of personnel. This includes hiring of faculty, staff, temporary wage hires, students, consultants, contractors, speakers, trainers and/or any grant-funded research personnel who will be compensated for providing a service for the School of Nursing. The hiring of standardized patients is not covered by this policy.

Reason for Policy

The Office of the Dean has ultimate accountability for GW Nursing management of fiscal and human resources. This includes workforce planning, budget management, GW recruitment process compliance, compensation equity, EEOC compliance, and headcount management. This policy ensures internal controls and hiring approval guidelines are in place and adhered to by hiring managers and their department leaders specific to the type of employment and associated funding sources.

Policy

All SON hiring requests must have approval from the Dean of Nursing, the Director of Finance, and the departmental leader prior to any recruitment efforts including posting, interviewing or and/or hiring.

The Hire Approval Process ensures GW Nursing hiring decisions have been reviewed and approved by identified departmental leaders before a verbal or written offer has been extended.

GW Nursing is committed to ensuring a fair and equitable recruiting and hiring process that results in the appropriate match of skills, knowledge, experience and job requirements in accordance with university policies. It is expected that GW Nursing recruitment processes have been adhered to leading up to the submission of a hire request for review and approval.

Under no circumstance should an offer be extended to a finalist (verbal or in writing) before approval is received from the Dean and Director of Finance. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in corrective action in accordance with GW university guidelines.

Procedures

Recruitment processes and procedures may vary depending on the category of, and purpose for, the hire and may change over time. Upon receiving approval from the Dean, Finance Director, and departmental leader, hiring managers for staff positions should consult with the SON HR Manager prior to initiating any recruitment. Hiring managers for any faculty positions, with the exception of temporary part-time semester hires, should consult with the Senior Advisor to the Dean for assistance with recruitment. Temporary part-time semester hires are handled through the Office of Academic Affairs and require approval from the respective Program Dean and the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
