Preparing teachers to shift the nursing paradigm

To meet the needs of a changing health care system, nurses must be prepared as clinicians who can exert transformative leadership, and faculty teaching in academic institutions must have the pedagogical knowledge and skills to prepare such leaders.

The Center for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) at the George Washington University School of Nursing serves to promote such pedagogical acumen by supporting evidence-based nursing education and advancement of the science through research, scholarship, publication, and collaboration. CERI’s mission is to forge researchers and scholars who can develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate evidence-based teaching practices.

Our objectives are to improve the science of nursing education through:

  • Supporting the growth of pedagogical experts and innovators who develop evidence for establishing best practices in teaching and learning
  • Discovering and translating innovative evidence-based strategies

We accomplish this by:

  • Fostering a culture of evidence-based teaching and learning excellence where faculty continually seek to become more effective and innovative teachers who serve as role models for students who, themselves, are becoming lifelong learners committed to excellence
  • Providing support for faculty scholarship, including research, creative projects, and grant opportunities
  • Creating and sustaining an inclusive, dynamic academic environment that supports and develops nurse leaders in pedagogy
  • Building a community of lifelong learners committed to excellence, innovation, and continued professional growth.
  • Creating opportunities for collaborative and interprofessional teams
  • Connecting with the larger campus community and communities beyond GW
  • Identifying, sharing, and advocating for research-based practices in university teaching and the resources that support them
  • Fostering campus conversations on teaching and learning that are informed by national and international higher education developments, as well as local issues and priorities
