Hildegart Gonzalez, Ph.D., a 2022-2023 Fellow in Health Policy and Media, is a finalist for the Spanish National Nursing Awards in the category of "Person Outside the Profession" who has contributed most in the field of nursing. She is being recognized by the Consejo General de Enfermería for her research on the social image, communicative competence and political competence of nurses. The winner is selected by popular vote.
Could you share your initial reaction when you found out you were being recognized as a finalist?
My first reaction was gratitude. I was grateful to the Navarre Nurses Council, because they had proposed me, and to the tribunal that had chosen my candidacy among all the proposals received from other councils of Spain.

What does this award mean to you personally and professionally?
These awards are an energy pump for me and my team to continue working with enthusiasm and determination to research and teach how we can improve the image of nurses so that it is consistent with their professional identity in the 21st century.
Estos premios son una bomba de energía para seguir junto a mi equipo trabajando con ilusión y riguridad en investigar y enseñar cómo podemos mejorar la imagen de las enfermeras para que sea coherente con su identidad profesional en el SXXI.
Can you tell us more about the work or projects that led to this recognition?
Summary of my four principal projects:
- In the first one, I analyze the evolution of the image that the Spanish press has disseminated of nursing in recent decades and whether COVID19 contributed in Spain and Chile to: a) give greater media visibility to nurses, increasing their role as sources of information; b) disseminate an image of the profession in accordance with its real identity and functions in the 21st century; c) determine whether nursing associations and colleges have modified their communication strategies to make nursing's contribution to global health more visible.
- The second investigates the ethical, legal and institutional guidelines on which the right to freedom of expression of nurses is based when they intervene in the media or social networks. It works on the definition of a safe framework that makes it possible to design a training plan that equips nurses with the offline and online communication skills they need to influence public health policies through the media and social networks, thus developing their political competence.
- The third investigates the potential of communication management by nursing councils, associations and unions to improve the public image and development of this profession.
- Fourth and lastly, I am directing a doctoral thesis that is culturally adapting and validating three scales that make it possible to measure the brand image that nurses have of themselves and what they would like to have. Having these scales validated in Spain will help to design actions to reduce the differences between how they see themselves and how they would like to be seen.

- En el primero analiza cuál ha sido la evolución de la imagen que la prensa española ha difundido de la enfermería en las últimas décadas y si el COVID19 contribuyó en España y en Chile a: a) Dar mayor visibilidad mediática a las enfermeras, aumentando su papel como fuentes informativas; b) Difundir una imagen de la profesión acorde con su identidad real y sus funciones en el Siglo XXI; c) Conocer si las asociaciones y colegios de enfermería modificaron sus estrategias de comunicación para visibilizar la contribución de la enfermería a la salud mundial.
- En el segundo investiga cuáles son las directrices deontológicas, legales e institucionales en las que se sustenta el derecho a la libertad de expresión de las enfermeras cuando intervienen en los medios de comunicación o en redes sociales. Trabaja en la definición de un marco seguro que posibilite diseñar un plan formativo que dote las enfermeras de las competencias de comunicación offline y online que precisan para influir a través de los medios de comunicación y de las redes sociales en las políticas públicas de salud, desarrollando de este modo su competencia política.
- El tercero investiga cuál es la potencialidad que la gestión comunicativa que realizan los colegios, asociaciones y sindicatos de enfermería tiene para mejorar la imagen pública y el desarrollo de esta profesión.
- El cuarto y último lugar dirijo una tesis doctoral que está adaptando culturalmente y validando tres escalas que permiten medir cuál es la imagen de marca que las enfermeras tienen de sí mismas y cuál desearían tener. Tener validada estas escalas en España nos ayudará a diseñar acciones para recudir las diferencias entre cómo se ver y cómo les gustaría ser vistas.
How do you see this award impacting your future work in healthcare?
The best thing about being nominated for these awards is that they allowed thousands of nurses to recognize the importance of the image of nurses that is disseminated in the media and how they can contribute to improving that image. In addition, many potential funders of our projects have been able to see the importance of these research topics and may be able to support us to carry out this research and other research that we would like to develop.
Lo mejor de haber sido nominada a estos premios es que nos han permitido que miles de enfermeras reconozcan la importancia que tiene la imagen que de ellas se difunde en los medios de comunicación y cómo ellas pueden contribuir mejorar esa imagen. Además, muchos potenciales financiadores de nuestros proyectos han podido ver la importancia de estos temas de investigación y quizá nos puedan apoyar para llevar a cabo estás investigaciones y otras que nos gustaría desarrollar.
Were there any mentors or colleagues who played a significant role in your journey to this award?
Undoubtedly there are many mentors and colleagues who have been key to the development of my research over the years, but I especially want to highlight two, without whom I would never have gotten to where I am now.
Diana Mason, who was the first professor I identified as a reference in the field I wanted to research. I was fascinated by her publications and her professional and academic career. I was very fortunate to meet her online and then in person. She has been my "fairy godmother" during these years for the knowledge she has given me, for her advice and for all the doors she has opened for me.
Richard Ricciardi, my mentor in my fellowship. Working with him hand in hand has been a real gift. I have learned so much in each of the meetings we have had. His knowledge of nursing at a global level; his ability to lead global organizations, such as Sigma Theta Tau International; and his closeness and involvement with me to help me get the best out of myself as a researcher, have allowed me to know the great potential that nurses have to improve the health of millions of people.
I am eternally grateful for everything they have taught me and continue to teach me.
Sin lugar a dudas hay muchos mentores y colegas que han sido claves para el desarrollo de mi investigación estos años, pero quiero destacar especialmente a dos, sin los cuáles nunca hubiera llegado a donde ahora estoy.
Diana Mason, que fue la primera profesora que identifiqué como referente en el campo que yo quería investigar. Me fascinaron sus publicaciones y su trayectoria profesional y académica. Tuve la gran suerte de conocerla online y luego en persona. Ella ha sido mi “hada madrina” durante estos años por los conocimientos que me ha aportado, por sus consejos y por todas las puertas que me ha abierto.
Richard Ricciardi, mi mentor en mi fellowship. Trabajar con él mano a mano ha sido un auténtico regalo. He aprendido mucho en cada una de las reuniones que hemos mantenido. Su conocimiento de la enfermería a nivel global; su capacidad de liderar los proyectos globales como Sigma ThetaTau; su cercanía e implicación conmigo para ayudarme a sacar de mí lo mejor como investigadora me han permitido conocer el gran potencial que tienen las enfermeras para mejorar la salud de millones de personas.
Estoy eternamente agradecida de todo lo que me han enseñado y me siguen enseñando.
