This preconference addresses the state of the science in simulations, using the NLN Jeffries Simulation Theory as a foundation and describing how it is incorporated in immersive simulation experiences at the George Washington University School of Nursing Simulation Learning and Innovation Center, a sophisticated two-floor experiential learning space.

Preconference attendees will participate in these five complementary presentations and hands-on activities:

The State of the Science in Simulations, presented by Dean Pamela Jeffries — Sets the stage using the NLN Jeffries Theory as a foundation and describing incorporation of the theory in the immersive simulation experiences at GW Nursing

A Call to Action: Strengthening Undergraduate Pediatric Learning through Simulation — Explores pediatric simulation in the undergraduate curriculum and features pediatric scenarios presented in a primary care office setting

Environmental Realism in Simulation-Based Learning Experiences — Explores strategies for environmental realism and affordable solutions, featuring GW Nursing’s Fundamental Basic Learning and Skills Training (BLAST) and Virtual Hospital as exemplars

Using a Quality and Safety Framework for Outcome Evaluation in Baccalaureate Nursing Simulation Education — Examines how the dynamic state of simulation development may impede efforts to establish consistent outcome evaluation methods and how a quality and safety framework fosters valid and reliable simulation outcome evaluation

Use of Technology in Simulation-Based Learning Experiences to Enhance Student Learning and for Organization Management — Explores selection and utilization of technology to enhance student learning through deliberate practice, engaging learners, and managing organizational activities

Purpose Statement

  • Showcase the incorporation of the NLN Jeffries Simulation Theory in the GW Nursing simulation experiences
  • Examine challenges simulation educators experience during development and implementation of simulation-based experiences
  • Explore strategies and solutions to resolve the challenges and enhance learner outcomes
