Laurie Theeke’s program of research is centered on the problem of loneliness and understanding how it influences the human health experience. She has completed multiple quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies with interprofessional teams, working together to understand how we can help lonely people. Dr. Theeke enjoys intervention development and has developed LISTEN, a theoretically framed and structured intervention designed to target loneliness. LISTEN was designed using concepts from story theory and principles of cognitive restructuring and has demonstrated effectiveness for diminishing loneliness and systolic blood pressure in lonely older adults and lonely adults who have suffered stroke. Her goal is to diminish the stigma associated with loneliness and discover how we can best treat lonely people.
