Assistant Director of Admissions Mindy Galvan's article titled, Failing the Profession: Nursing School Admissions Practices Need to Change if the Field is to Become More Diverse was published Monday in the academic industry publication Inside HigherEd.
Her article discusses the need for a holistic approach to evaluating candidates for nursing schools, claiming that "reliance on academic merit for admission selection...has led to disparities in health care for underserved communities. Using standardized test scores, grade point average and grades earned in science courses, without consideration of life experiences and attributes, has limited racial and cultural diversity among nursing school applicants."
