MSN: Nurse-Midwifery (OLD)

Review for Pre-Accreditation

The Nurse-Midwifery track in the MSN Program at The George Washington School of Nursing (GW SON), will be undergoing review for pre-accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME). A site visit is scheduled for April 18-20, 2023 and the program will be reviewed at the July 2023, ACME Board of Review Meeting.

In accordance with ACME Policies and Procedures, ACME is seeking third party comments. ACME invites interested parties to submit written third-party comments concerning the qualifications of the newly proposed midwifery program at GW SON that is seeking ACME pre-accreditation. Using the ACME Third Party Comments form, we invite you to submit these comments to Angela Smith, ACME Executive Director, [email protected], or via postal mail to ACME/Attn: Angela Smith at 8403 Colesville Rd., Suite 1230, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Comments can be submitted prior to the site visit April 18-10, 2023 or 45 days May 15, 2023 before the Board of Review meeting.

The MSN: Nurse-Midwifery program option is a collaboration between the George Washington University School of Nursing, which awards an MSN, and Shenandoah University, which awards a post-graduate certificate.

The program stresses the integration of research and nurse-midwifery practice with a strong emphasis on women’s health and primary care from antepartal and perinatal care through postpartum and neonatal care and role development.

This path prepares graduates as nurse-midwives who are eligible to sit for the national certification exam given by the American Midwifery Certification Board.

Additional Requirements

1. Virtual New Student Orientation

You will be required to complete the Virtual New Student Orientation, which provides the knowledge and tools needed to be successful at GW Nursing. You will learn about the academic resources available to you, program requirements, course registration, online technology and other expectations. You will also connect with faculty members, advisers and your fellow students.

2. Campus Learning and Skills Intensive (CLASI)

Students come to campus before they start their first clinical course to participate in CLASI.  Students participate in simulation-based learning and workshops to progress toward clinical competency

3. Initial Antepartal and Primary Care Skills Training

In the fall of your final year, you will go to Shenandoah University for classes and skills training before beginning initial antepartal and primary care clinical experiences.

4. Perinatal Skills Training

In the spring of your final year, you will go to Shenandoah University again for five days to participate in classes and skills training before beginning perinatal clinical experiences.

Technology Requirements

Each student admitted to the MSN program is expected to own and have ready access to a laptop or tablet with basic productivity software for classroom use. View Policy.

A completed application includes the following components:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Preferred scholastic GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Official transcripts (from all post-secondary schools)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Current resume
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Active and unencumbered nursing licensure

At the conclusion of this MSN program, you will be able to:

Sites and preceptors for the nurse-midwifery clinical portion of the program are managed by Shenandoah University faculty and staff. You will be asked to help to find and secure sites.
