Aging and Humanities

The George Washington University School of Nursing faculty and staff are always focused on improving health care and our communities locally, nationally and globally.

Geriatrics and Palliative Care Curriculum

The Center for Aging, Health and Humanities, which is part of GW Nursing, works with the Geriatric Education Utilizing a Palliative Care Framework (GEPaC) project to provide increased access to high-quality continuing education focused in geriatrics and palliative care for practicing health care professionals, including nurses, occupational and physical therapists, physician assistants, and other clinicians who provide care for the elderly.

GEPaC is an online curriculum that provides knowledge and skills to meet the unique needs of aging adults with serious chronic illness to maintain optimum functional abilities in the presence of protracted illness, promoting quality of life and preparing for peaceful death amid chronic disease. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization collaborated with the Center to provide continuing medical education for GEPaC.

We collaborate with faculty and scholars in the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences to improve health care systems through interdisciplinary eduation, research, clinical innovations and health policy initiatives.

Geriatric Education Center

The Washington, D.C., Area Geriatric Education Center Consortium (WAGECC) is a program of the Center. WAGECC is a collaboration of several local universities and health care organizatiot to improve the quality of life for older adults by improving knowledge, attitudes and skills to health care professionals.

This initiative provides interprofessional education and support to health care professionals and incorporates learning through the humanities and arts to enhance the competencies of the geriatric workforce and their ability to provide person-centered care.
