This highly interactive one-week program will provide simulation directors and coordinators with an immersive opportunity to learn best practices in building, leading and sustaining a simulation program. The program will focus on evaluation and strategic planning with an emphasis on aligning budget to program goals and resources. Highlights include the selection of equipment and technology to meet short and long-range outcomes for leadership, operations and education. The program concludes with participants operationalizing a simulation plan.

  • Create a strategic/business plan for a simulation center.
  • Lead and build a simulation team using identified strengths.
  • Align budget with program goals and revenue stream.
  • Evaluate equipment and technology to meet the needs of your institution.
  • Use business acumen for growth and sustainability of a simulation program.
  • Operationalize a simulation plan following standards and guidelines.

Current or prospective simulation directors and coordinators of simulation programs are encouraged to attended from either academic or practice institutions.

This immersion takes place at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, VA at GW Nursing's state-of-the-art simulation center

Best Practices in Teaching and Using Simulation Pedagogy

This one-week immersive faculty enrichment program will provide nurse educators a rich experience to learn more about best practices in using clinical simulations in the nursing program.  The full week will focus on the use of simulation pedagogy and the integration of simulations into the nursing curriculum.  Major concepts and activities used with simulations will be provided; a few examples include the simulation theory, best practices, and how to conduct a debriefing to name a few topics covered in the week.  Educators will be immersed in group work creating simulation scenarios, implementing the scenarios, and then evaluating the outcomes of the creative work.  Overall the week-long program will provide a rich faculty development opportunity to enhance teaching-learning skills around the use of simulation pedagogy with immersion on how to create, conduct, and evaluate clinical simulations.

  • Examine the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: Simulation
  • Discuss the essential elements of getting started to create a simulation-based curriculum
  • Explain the NLN/Jeffries Simulation Theory
  • Demonstrate how to write, implement and evaluate a simulation scenario
  • Create a faculty development plan for implementing simulations into your nursing curriculum
  • Describe the present and future direction for clinical simulations and nursing education implications

Individuals from either health or academic institutions who are interested in using simulation as a nursing teaching strategy are encouraged to attend. This course is set up from basic to complex moving the participant from novice to intermediate. It is not for the expert.

This program is designed for the simulation technician/specialist who has a recognized need for education in best practices in simulation technology. Course content includes simulation pedagogy, operating systems, network hardware, functionality of simulation equipment, operations, troubleshooting and moulage to name a few. The course begins with an optional day preceding the immersion with content on basic anatomical and physiological processes focused on cardiovascular and respiratory systems as it pertains to simulator technology. Medical terminology is briefly discussed.

Upon completion of the immersion, the participants will be able to:

  1. Apply anatomical and physiological processes to simulation technology (optional).
  2. Describe foundations of simulation theory, standards, guidelines and methods.
  3. Define roles and responsibilities for the technician/specialist in relation to simulation team.
  4. Develop functional knowledge of simulation technology.
  5. Integrate, utilize, maintain and troubleshoot simulation systems and technology.
  6. Enhance fidelity of simulation-based education with equipment and moulage.

The audience for the immersion is current or prospective simulation technicians and specialists of simulation programs with a recognized need for education in best practices. The program targets both academic and practice institutions.

This immersion takes place at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, VA at GW Nursing's state-of-the-art simulation center
